I am not a popular dog owner!
At least when it comes to 90% of the dog owners who meet me every day while walking
Why?
My dogs are not allowed to play with every dog they just met
The first and most important
reason is:
If dogs do not know each other, they do not play with each other!
They manage conflicts in which they would not find themselves if their owners wouldn't put them there
Or do you talk to every stranger on the street?
Do you like to be touched by strangers?
Dogs also don't like that!
Dogs have an individual distance and don't like to be greeted head-on
If they could, they would move out of the way or create space by barking
Leash aggression here we come
If contact with the strange dog cannot be avoided, your dog has exactly four possibilities to solve the conflict.
This is called the four F's.
- FIGHT
- FLIGHT
- FREEZE
- FIDDLE ABOUT
Most dogs have already learned in the puppy playgroup that the first three variants do not really contribute to the 'solution' and many dogs prefer the FIDDLE ABOUT to resolve encounter conflicts
First, the dog goes into the play bow position
(the owner squeaks gleaming: look he wants to play), he then jumps with the front paws in this position from right to left and vice versa, before the other dog suddenly sprints and the two start a race.
In this case, one is the hunter and the other is the chased victim, the roles are not exchanged
Often you see a FREEZE from the first dog and here it depends very much on the two dogs whether the whole thing tilts or not
This is not a game, but pure conflict management and stress reduction, but most dog owners think that the dogs are playing so nicely together
Why my dog is not allowed to participate, is probably now explained by itself
By the way, my dogs have contact with other dogs almost every day
With their mates, whom they meet regularly
They are the dogs I know and like, yes and in this relaxed team, a short game arises
Without stress !
The question is:
Which dogs have the better chance of not getting into a fight?
